What are Controls?

Controls are the foundation of Bramble's management automation and intelligence. They define a given metric and alert conditions for detecting when someone is outside an expected boundary, in a given timeframe. Each rule is represented by setting up a Control, which is regularly checked every few minutes.

The benefits of using Controls

Controls have several benefits, including:

  • Pushes information to managers: Controls push essential information to managers, saving them time and effort that would have been spent finding it.

  • Daily insight to managers: Managers get daily insights into the company's performance, which helps them make informed decisions.

  • Drives leaders to be proactive: By focusing on actioning insights, not collating them, Controls drive leaders to be proactive instead of reactive.

  • Intelligent system pushing data to managers to action: Controls set up automatic recommendations, flags in the system telling you that something may be worth investigating.

How Controls fit into the bigger picture

Controls fit into your daily Bramble workflow as follows:

  • Plan variance: You can control your output, and know the levers you can pull to reach a desired outcome.

  • Cadence: is the management framework your company wants you to follow.

  • Controls: are the management policies your company. They flag performance indicators, telling you that something might be worth investigating.

In short, Cadence tells you where to go, but Controls tell you what to focus on.

How do Controls work?

Controls work by setting up rules for each metric that needs to be monitored. The rules include the alert conditions for detecting when something is outside an expected boundary, in a given timeframe.

When a metric crosses a threshold, an alert is flagged, and an event is logged, changing the overall state of the monitor from OK to FLAGGED.

Owners can see a list of all monitors and filter them by accessible user/node, based on status OK/FLAGGED. Front Line Managers (FLMs) can only see alerts/events/metrics for their team, while Individual Contributors (ICs) can only see their alerts/events/metrics. Admins/Owners can see alerts on their Hubs and drill down to a filtered list of their team's triggered monitors.

They push essential information to managers, provide daily insights into the company's performance, and drive leaders to be proactive. By setting up rules for each metric, Controls help you stay on top of your business and focus on what matters most.
